Occupy the Common Ground

Chart published by by G. William Domhoff, University of California, Santa Cruz

The GOP is more interested in being right than in solving economic problems. The Democratic Party is more interested in appeasing everyone than in doing what is right.

Supply-side ideology failed, as the past 30 years of deregulation and lowering taxes have ended the previous 40 years of shared prosperity for 100%. Just as the Great Society also failed with taxes that were too high and a government that was too big.

The Irony of America: Most Americans do not want socialist redistribution of wealth in the form of big welfare programs and most Americans do not want plutocratic redistribution of wealth in form of top the 1% getting massively rich at the expense of everyone else.

It is not either/or, despite the raging debate on 24-hour cable and Internet.

Since the middle of the 19th century, he American Dream has been fulfilled with a combination free-markets and socialist economic principles.

Most Americans want:

1. Money out of politics
2. World-class public schools and infrastructure
3. A solvent social safety net
4. An effective combination of de-regulation and regulation

I think we can all agree on these four things. So, let’s "‘git ‘er done!”
